Chapter 1

The Ghost of Courtship Formulas and the Fear of Getting It Wrong

Ezra James i

I was sitting across from this girl in a diner back in twenty ten, and I literally had a physical checklist in my pocket, like a folded piece of lined paper with seven distinct rules I thought I had to hit before we could even order dessert. It was, er, it was completely exhausting, and honestly, I was terrified that if I stepped off the path by one millimeter, God was going to revoke my future wife.

Selah Grace

Twenty ten, in a diner with a folded piece of paper? Ezra, that is, um, that is so intense.

Ezra James i

It, it really was. And I know I was not the only one. So many of us grew up under this massive weight of high stakes relationship formulas. I mean, think back to nineteen ninety seven when Joshua Harris published I Kissed Dating Goodbye. That book sold millions of copies, and it basically convinced an entire generation that dating was a sin and that traditional courtship was the only holy way.

Dr. Naomi Ellis

Right, but then fast forward twenty one years to twenty eighteen. In twenty eighteen, author Joshua Harris publicly retracted his nineteen ninety seven book I Kissed Dating Goodbye. He acknowledged that its rigid, non scriptural rules against dating created fear, false promises of marriage, and deep relational harm. He explicitly stated, I no longer agreed with the central idea of I Kissed Dating Goodbye that dating should be avoided.

Selah Grace

Twenty eighteen was such a turning point for so many people who were raised in that culture. To hear the person who built the rulebook say, wait a minute, those rules were not actually in the Bible, it was like this collective exhale, but also a lot of confusion.

Dr. Naomi Ellis

Because when you take away the formula, people are left with the raw emotion they were trying to avoid in the first place, which is the fear of getting it wrong. From a therapeutic standpoint, formulas are a defense mechanism against vulnerability. If I follow steps one through five, I am guaranteed a happy outcome, right? But Scripture never promises a formulaic, pain free pathway to marriage.

Ezra James i

Yeah, I, I mean, I remember going on dates where I would sit there like an interviewer. I would ask about her theology, her five year spiritual goals, her family structure, all before we even knew if we liked the same kind of music! I was so consumed by performance anxiety that I ended up ending a really promising connection with a wonderful woman simply because she didn't fit bullet point four on my list.

Selah Grace

Bullet point four! You literally walked away from a human being because of a manufactured standard. That is where legalism hurts us. It makes us trade spiritual wisdom for mechanical obedience.

Dr. Naomi Ellis

And when those formulaic relationships inevitably fail, as many of them did, people don't just feel heartbroken, Ezra. They feel spiritually defective. They think, I followed the formula, so why didn't God keep His end of the deal? But God never made that deal. Man made that deal.

Chapter 2

What Courtship Actually Means in Scripture Purpose Over Performance

Ezra James i

So if we throw out the rigid nineteen ninety seven rulebook, what, what are we actually left with when we look at the Bible? Because people hear the word courtship and they still picture, I don't know, a father sitting on a porch with a shotgun asking for permission to hold hands.

Dr. Naomi Ellis

Well, let's look at what is actually in the text versus cultural custom. When you look at Ruth chapter three, for example, Ruth and Boaz, or First Thessalonians chapter four, verses three through five, where Paul writes about controlling your own body in holiness and honor, not in passionate lust like the heathen who do not know God. The emphasis in Scripture is never on a step by step dating manual. The emphasis is always on honor, transparency, self control, and character.

Selah Grace

First Thessalonians four, verses three through five. That is about the heart posture, isn't it? It is not saying you cannot sit in a car alone after eight p m. It is asking, are you honoring the soul in front of you, or are you consuming them?

Dr. Naomi Ellis

Precisely, Selah. In clinical practice, I see two dangerous extremes today. On one side, you have the legacy of rigid legalistic courtship. On the other side, you have modern passive dating, where two people drift along for three, four, five years, seeing where things go, with zero clarity, zero declared intention, and zero accountability. Both are emotionally unsafe. Passive dating creates chronic ambiguity, while legalistic courtship creates performance anxiety.

Ezra James i

So passive dating is basically floating down a river without a paddle, and legalist courtship is trying to ride a train on tracks that don't exist in Scripture.

Selah Grace

That is such a good way to frame it, Ezra. If I could re derive this in plain, everyday language for anyone listening who feels lost, true biblical intentionality is not about checking off a list of rules. It is not about asking permission for every coffee date or banning hand holding. It is simply treating another person's heart with deep reverence. It means being honest about where you are, clear about where you are going, and respecting their time and emotional energy enough to not lead them on.

Dr. Naomi Ellis

Intentionality requires clarity, Selah. It means having transparent conversations about marriage, faith, and life vision within a reasonable timeline, rather than hiding behind endless casual hangouts or, on the flip side, forcing a lifelong covenant commitment onto date number two.

Ezra James i

Man, date number two covenant expectations, I have definitely been guilty of that in my early twenties, trying to discern if she was the mother of my future children before I even knew her favorite color.

Chapter 3

Wise Counsel vs Coercive Control Navigating Community Involvement

Selah Grace

You know, speaking of community involvement, this brings up something that hit me really hard a few years ago. Proverbs fifteen twenty two says, plans fail for lack of counsel, but with many advisers they succeed. But there is a huge difference between seeking wise counsel and surrendering your personal autonomy to spiritualized pressure.

Ezra James i

Wait, Selah, what, what actually happened with you? You said you dealt with high pressure church advice?

Selah Grace

Oh, um, yeah. It was, it was back when I was twenty four. I was dating someone, and we were trying to be really intentional, so we invited several older leaders from our church community into our lives to give input. But instead of offering wise guidance, it turned into this conflicting, overwhelming tribunal. One pastor's wife told me I was being too independent because I had career goals, while another leader told him he wasn't spiritual enough because he didn't pray out loud the exact way they expected. We were getting completely contradictory commands, and if we questioned them, we were accused of being rebellious against God.

Dr. Naomi Ellis

That is classic coercive control disguised as discipleship. Proverbs fifteen twenty two mentions advisers to bring wisdom, not dictates. Healthy mentors act as light on your path, helping you see clearly so that you, under God, can make the decision. They do not hold the steering wheel of your life.

Ezra James i

So how do you actually tell the difference between, say, a legitimate spiritual red flag raised by a friend, and just someone imposing their personal preference or emotional control on you?

Dr. Naomi Ellis

That is the key question, Ezra. A legitimate red flag involves objective character traits, dishonesty, unaddressed addiction, anger issues, financial deceit, or a clear lack of fruit in their spiritual walk. A personal preference or spiritualized control sounds like, he doesn't dress like a worship leader, or she isn't submission oriented enough because she speaks up in group settings, or God didn't give me a peace about you two, without any objective scripture or behavioral evidence to back it up.

Selah Grace

That line, God didn't give me a peace about it, was used like a weapon in my situation! It made me ignore my own discernment. I had to learn the hard way that wise counsel respects your personal responsibility before God. Mentors should help you hear God's voice, not replace God's voice.

Ezra James i

Right, they are supposed to be mirrors reflecting truth back to you, not puppet masters pulling the strings.

Chapter 4

Emotional Clarity and Modern Boundaries Guarding Without Isolating

Ezra James i

Let's talk about another scripture that gets thrown around constantly in Christian dating circles. Proverbs four twenty three, guard your heart above all else, for upon it depend the switches of life. I think for most of my twenties, I interpreted guard your heart as build a twenty foot concrete wall around your emotions and put snipers on the roof.

Dr. Naomi Ellis

You and millions of others, Ezra. From a therapeutic lens, so many Christian singles use Proverbs four twenty three as a spiritualized defense mechanism. They confuse self protection with wisdom. When you isolate yourself or refuse to show emotional vulnerability, you aren't guarding your heart, you are incarcerating it.

Selah Grace

Incarcerating your heart! Wow. That is exactly what it feels like when you are so afraid of getting hurt that you refuse to let anyone in. So how do we actually practice healthy, paced vulnerability without either erecting concrete walls or trauma dumping on date three?

Ezra James i

Yeah, what are the actual practical guardrails for modern dating when it comes to communication pacing?

Dr. Naomi Ellis

Practical boundaries look like this. First, manage the pace of communication. Late night texting from eleven p m to two a m creates a false sense of intimacy. You feel deeply connected because it is late and quiet, but you haven't actually observed how that person functions in daylight, in community, or under stress. Second, practice proportional sharing. Your deep personal trauma and past wounds should be shared gradually over time as trust is earned, not dumped in the first month to test if they can handle you.

Selah Grace

Proportional sharing. That makes so much sense, Dr. Naomi. Because when you reveal everything all at once, you force a spiritual and emotional depth that the foundation of the relationship cannot support yet.

Ezra James i

And what about spiritual intimacy? Because I have seen couples pray together for hours on date four, sharing their deepest prophetic words, and then two weeks later they realize they don't even like each other's personality.

Dr. Naomi Ellis

Spiritual intimacy is just as powerful as physical intimacy, Ezra. If you are praying intensely together, fast tracking spiritual bonds before you have established relational reality, character assessment, and basic compatibility, you are blurring your own discernment. You have to keep spiritual intimacy paced alongside relational truth.

Selah Grace

It comes back to fear again, doesn't it? Fear of heartbreak leads people to either rush into intense spiritual bonding to lock the person down, or completely shut down to avoid getting hurt. But perfect love casts out fear.

Chapter 5

Reclaiming Hope Walking Intentionally in Faith and Freedom

Ezra James i

We have covered so much ground today, from the ghost of nineteen ninety seven courtship rules to navigating community pressure and setting healthy emotional boundaries. As we bring this home, where do we shift our focus so people aren't leaving with just another checklist?

Dr. Naomi Ellis

We shift from finding the right formula to cultivating Christlike character. Romans twelve verse two tells us, do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind. And First Corinthians thirteen verses four through seven reminds us what real love looks like, it is patient, kind, does not envy, does not boast, is not proud. When you stop obsessing over the mechanics of dating and start focusing on becoming an emotionally healthy, Spirit led person, the entire dynamic changes.

Selah Grace

I just want to speak directly to anyone listening right now who is experiencing deep dating fatigue, or carrying shame from past purity culture mess ups, or feeling like age thirty or forty is creeping up and God somehow forgot about you. I want you to know that your desire for companionship and covenant is recognized by God. It is not bad, and it is not foolish.

Ezra James i

Mm, that is so needed, Selah. Please, keep going.

Selah Grace

Let's take a deep breath together. Lord, for every heart listening right now that feels weary from rigid expectations, confused by past legalism, or afraid of making another mistake, we ask for your peace. Wash away the shame of past choices and the anxiety of the unknown future. Give them clarity of mind, healthy discernment, and the courage to open their hearts in wisdom and freedom. Remind them that they are not late, they are not behind, and they are deeply loved right now in this season.

Dr. Naomi Ellis

Amen. You are not on a deadline that God is missing. Walk in freedom, set clear and loving boundaries, seek true character, and trust that God's grace is far bigger than any dating mistake you could ever make. Good chatting with you both today, talk soon.
