When God Talk Masks Red Flags

This episode unpacks how people use spiritual language to rush into relationships, confusing chemistry, anxiety, and personal longing with divine confirmation. The hosts explore why healthy discernment means testing character, watching for red flags, and choosing consistency over intensity.

Chapter 1

The God Told Me Trap and Spiritual Bypassing

Erica R Bell

I mean, if I have to hear one more person say, God told me he is the one, after three weeks of eating tacos on Tuesday nights, I might actually lose my mind. It, it, it drives me crazy because we use spiritual words to cover up emotional urgency. We do! We take our own impatience, wrap it in a selective Bible verse, put a prophetic bow on top of it, and then act like questioning it is somehow disobeying the Holy Spirit. But it is not discernment. It is spiritual bypassing. It is a way to skip the, the actual hard work of looking at character, looking at how a man treats a waitress, or how he responds when he does not get his way.

Ezra James i

Three weeks! Three weeks of tacos and suddenly it is a divine decree. That is, that is wild, Erica. But I get it, I get why people fall for it.

Selah Grace

Wait a minute. It is so easy to confuse the intensity of a feeling with the presence of God. When you want something so badly, your heart will find a way to preach a whole sermon to justify what your eyes are seeing.

Dr. Naomi Ellis

In clinical practice, I see this every single week. Take this listener email we got from Maya, thirty one years old, living in Atlanta. She has been dating this worship leader for less than a month. Three weeks in, he looks her in the eye after service and says God gave him a vision that she is his future wife. Meanwhile, this man has changed jobs four times in twelve months, owes his roommate nine hundred dollars in back rent, and shuts down completely if she brings up how he communicates.

Erica R Bell

Nine hundred dollars in back rent! But he had a vision!

Ezra James i

See, Maya is trapped because she thinks if she questions his rent situation or those four jobs in twelve months, she is resisting God. And, er, I have to be completely honest here, because I was that guy when I was twenty eight. I was dating a girl named Sarah back in Dallas, and I was so terrified of actual emotional vulnerability and real commitment that I weaponized destiny language. I literally told her, I feel like God has drawn our paths together for a global kingdom purpose. I used all the big spiritual words! But the truth was, I just wanted the emotional validation of a serious relationship without doing the personal work to clear my own debt or face my fear of being truly known. Destiny talk was my emotional shortcut.

Selah Grace

You used destiny to skip over development, Ezra. That is, that is so insightful. Because when a man drops a vision on a woman, it creates this heavy spiritual obligation where she feels guilty for asking basic practical questions.

Dr. Naomi Ellis

It creates a psychological pressure cooker. When someone invokes God as the architect of a three week romance, it shuts down critical evaluation. You cannot question the vision without feeling like you are questioning God Himself, and that is a very dangerous dynamic.

Chapter 2

Chemistry versus Confirmation Testing the Fruit

Selah Grace

Hmm. We have to talk about what is actually happening inside our bodies when we meet someone new. Because so many women mistake emotional anxiety for spiritual confirmation. They feel those butterflies, that intense physical chemical surge, that nervous racing energy, and they say, oh, God is moving! But wait a minute. Galatians five, verses twenty two and twenty three tells us what the fruit of the Spirit actually is. It is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self control. Notice anxiety and hurry are nowhere on that list. Divine alignment produces a deep settled peace and mental clarity, not a chaotic rush where you feel like you are losing your mind.

Ezra James i

Butterflies are often just panic in a party dress! That is what my mentor used to say. We get those stress spikes, that elevated cortisol, and we call it love.

Dr. Naomi Ellis

Physiologically, Ezra, you are spot on. That adrenaline rush triggers confirmation bias, especially for someone who has been in a prolonged season of singlehood. If you have been praying for five years for a husband, your brain is actively searching for evidence that this new person is the answer to that prayer. So when he yells at a customer service agent over a late food delivery, or shows an explosive temper when stuck in traffic on Interstate seventy five, confirmation bias makes you rewrite the narrative. You tell yourself, oh, he is just stressed, or he is under spiritual warfare because of his destiny. You project scripture onto plain red flags.

Erica R Bell

Spiritual warfare over a delayed hamburger! We really do perform athletic mental gymnastics to excuse bad behavior, don't we?

Ezra James i

We really do! But let me throw a question out to you, Selah. What if the chemistry is just off the charts, like undeniable from night one? Are you saying that intense physical connection is automatically a red flag, or should it just be a sign to tap the brakes?

Selah Grace

I think high physical chemistry early on is a signal to slow down, not to sprint forward. Chemistry is like gasoline. Gasoline is wonderful if it is contained in an engine that is designed to handle it, but if you drop a match on open fuel without a framework of character, you just burn the whole house down. High chemistry blinds you to the absence of character. So when the sparks are flying at a ten out of ten, that is precisely when you need to drop your speed to ten miles an hour and watch how that person operates when the feeling cools down.

Dr. Naomi Ellis

That is a crucial therapeutic distinction. High emotional intensity early in a relationship often masks emotional unavailability. True safety builds gradually, layer by layer, through consistent observed behavior over time.

Erica R Bell

Yes! It is about consistency over intensity every single time.

Chapter 3

The Scriptural Method Active Testing Over Passive Waiting

Erica R Bell

You know, Mark Ballenger wrote something so powerful on Romans twelve two. Paul writes that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect. Ballenger points out something so sharp. He says, it does not say by endlessly waiting you will discern the will of God. Read that again! It does not say by endlessly waiting you will discern the will of God. It says by testing! Scripture calls for active observation, for real world evaluation, not sitting on your couch praying for a magical sign while ignoring how a person actually lives!

Ezra James i

It does not say by endlessly waiting! Wow, Erica, that line lands right in the solar plexus. Because so many believers think holiness is just passive waiting, like sitting in a spiritual waiting room until a sign drops out of the sky.

Dr. Naomi Ellis

Look at First John chapter four, verse one. It explicitly instructs us, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits to see whether they are from God. In clinical counseling, I translate testing the spirits into evaluating concrete behavior under stress. How does this person handle conflict when you disagree on a Friday night? How do they manage money when an unbudgeted six hundred dollar car repair bill comes up? How do they handle accountability when their pastor or a trusted friend calls out an inconsistency? If they fly off the handle, shut down, or manipulate you when you bring up a boundary, they have failed the test, regardless of how beautifully they lead prayer at church.

Erica R Bell

Ugh, Naomi, you are speaking directly to my twenty five year old self. I stayed in a relationship for three whole years, three years!, with a man who looked like an absolute saint on paper. He was at church every single Sunday morning at eight thirty sharp. He carried his Bible, he raised his hands, he led the young adult ministry small group. But behind closed doors, he was emotionally dishonest, passive aggressive, and completely incapable of admitting when he was wrong. I mistook his church attendance for character alignment, and it cost me three years of peace!

Selah Grace

Three years is a long time to pay for mistaking religious habit for spiritual fruit, Erica. Church attendance is a routine, but character is revealed when things get uncomfortable.

Ezra James i

I think men can fall into that routine trap too, right? You go through the motions because you know the right answers, but your internal life is a complete mess.

Dr. Naomi Ellis

Precisely. Religious activity is easy to fake. Character under pressure cannot be faked for long if you are actively testing and observing over a ninety day window.

Chapter 4

His Heart Her Heart Gods Heart

Ezra James i

Let us look at what is happening inside a man's mind here. From a man's perspective, look, when a guy meets a woman who is high value, spiritual, and gives him approval, it is so easy for him to mistake that emotional high for a full divine green light. He gets that rush of acceptance and says, God must have sent her! But then, on the flip side, you have guys who use God's timing as a convenient spiritual dodge. They will date a woman for four years, enjoy all the emotional benefits of marriage, and then when she asks about a concrete timeline for proposal, he strokes his chin and says, er, well, I am just praying and waiting on the Lord's timing. That is not spiritual patience, brothers! That is emotional cowardice hidden behind religious vocabulary.

Selah Grace

Four years of praying about a decision you could make in four months! That brings us right to her heart. Women often possess this deep, beautiful desire to nurture potential. We see a man with gifts, charisma, and a heart for God, and we fall in love with his potential instead of his present reality. We see his inconsistency, his financial instability, or his lack of emotional discipline, and we say, oh, God is still working on him. But wait a minute. You cannot marry a man's future potential. You marry the man who shows up today. When you ignore repeated red flags just to preserve your romantic narrative, you are not acting in faith, you are acting in fear of starting over.

Dr. Naomi Ellis

And what is God's heart in all of this? God's standard for a covenant partner is grounded in His own character. God sends partners who reflect truth, integrity, emotional safety, and mutual honor. A relationship that is orchestrated by the Holy Spirit will never require you to compromise your dignity, ignore your safety, or surrender your emotional sanity. God never uses manipulation, spiritual guilt, or high pressure tactics to force two people together. If a dynamic relies on pressure to maintain control, it is driven by human ego, not the Kingdom of God.

Erica R Bell

If it requires you to lose your peace to keep the relationship, it is not from God. Plain and simple!

Ezra James i

That right there should be printed on a card and handed out at every church singles event in North America.

Selah Grace

It really should. God gives us wisdom so we do not have to live in confusion.

Chapter 5

Heart Check Next Steps and the Courage to Walk Away

Dr. Naomi Ellis

Let us give our listeners three practical heart check questions to ask themselves tonight. Number one: Does this relationship lower your overall anxiety, or does it keep your nervous system in a constant state of hypervigilance? Number two: When you bring up a hard truth or a boundary, does this person lean in with humility, or do they become defensive and flip the blame onto you? And number three: If this person never changed a single behavior from this day forward, would you joyfully honor them as your partner for the next fifty years?

Ezra James i

Fifty years! That third question will clear out your dating pipeline real fast!

Erica R Bell

Real fast! And here is a practical next step. Put a ninety day boundary test in place. For ninety days, pause all talk of marriage, destiny, or future life planning. Slow down physical intimacy, stop paying his bills or solving his problems, and just observe his behavior. Watch how he acts when the spotlight and the pressure are turned off. A godly man who respects you will welcome that space to demonstrate his integrity. A man who was using spiritual language to manipulate you will grow impatient and walk away, and that exit is a gift from God!

Selah Grace

Walking away from an alignment that does not match God's character is not a failure. It is an act of obedience and self respect.

Erica R Bell

Let us pray together over everyone listening right now. Father God, right now I lift up every single person listening to this conversation who feels confused, pressured, or afraid of making the wrong decision. God, give them supernatural discernment right now. Deliver them from the fear of missing out, from the fear of being lonely, and from the trap of spiritualizing bad behavior. Give them the courage to ask the hard questions, to trust the red flags You are revealing, and to step away from anything that disrupts Your peace. Fill their hearts with confidence knowing that Your best for them will never require them to settle for emotional instability or spiritual confusion. In Jesus' name, Amen.

Ezra James i

Amen to that, Erica. Good stuff today.
