Chemistry or Calling? Spotting Real Relationship Fruit

0:00|0:00

In this episode, the hosts unpack how emotional chemistry can imitate divine alignment, why coincidence and confirmation bias can cloud discernment, and how to use a 90-day observation window to slow things down. They also explore biblical fruit, spiritual performance, mixed signals, and the pressure test for seeing whether a relationship produces peace, clarity, and healthy boundaries.

Chapter 1

The Counterfeit Spark: When Emotional Chemistry Masks Divine Alignment

Erica R Bell

I remember sitting on my couch, late, late at night, telling myself, God, God brought this man right to my door. I mean, we listened to the exact same worship track on our first drive. We were speaking the same language, or, or at least I thought we were. But it, it was an emotional tornado, honestly, disguised as a divine appointment.

Selah Grace

Wait, pause right there, Erica. A tornado. Because that whirlwind, that, that instant goosebump connection, it feels so holy in the moment, doesn't it? We start treating everyday coincidences like they are prophetic signposts written in the stars for us.

Erica R Bell

Yes, exactly! Like, oh, you love Bethel Music too? You were praying for a life transition at three in the morning last Tuesday? Must be God, right? But I was using those tiny sparks to build a whole fantasy while completely ignoring the fact that he was inconsistent, evasive, and, and really emotionally unavailable.

Ezra James i

I see this all the time, honestly. We call it the coincidence trap. A guy shares a favorite verse or shows up at your church, and suddenly confirmation bias kicks into high gear. You grab onto that shared song or that three in the morning prayer, and you let it overwrite sixty days of red flags.

Dr. Naomi Ellis

And as a therapist, I have to step in and say, romantic chemistry produces dopamine and oxytocin. Those neurochemicals mimic spiritual peace, but they are not spiritual peace. Chemistry is about speed and intensity, but divine alignment is about stability and peace.

Ezra James i

That speed is actually the weapon, though. That fast pacing, rushing the emotional intimacy in week one, it is often used, sometimes deliberately, sometimes totally unconsciously, to bypass real discernment. That is why I always tell people to implement a strict ninety day observation principle. You do not assess a foundation during a fireworks show. You wait ninety days to see if the character stays consistent after the initial high wears off.

Selah Grace

A ninety day observation window. That gives your heart time to catch up with your spirit, so you are not making covenant decisions on a chemical high.

Chapter 2

The Fruit Test vs Spiritual Performance: Scriptural Standards of Discernment

Dr. Naomi Ellis

Well, scripturally speaking, Jesus gave us the exact diagnostic tool in Matthew chapter seven, verse sixteen. He said, you will know them by their fruits. He did not say you will know them by their vocabulary, or their public prayers, or how loudly they say amen in the front row. In Galatians chapter five, verses twenty two and twenty three, Paul lists the actual fruit: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self control.

Erica R Bell

Self control under pressure. That one right there. Because anyone can quote scripture over dinner, but how do they handle a delayed flight, or an argument, or a boundary?

Dr. Naomi Ellis

Precisely, Erica. Spiritual performance is an audition. It relies on religious jargon and visible acts like leading a small group. Spiritual fruit, on the other hand, is a character state that only reveals itself when life gets uncomfortable or when nobody is watching.

Ezra James i

I, I, I have to be completely honest here and take some accountability, because in my mid twenties, I was that guy. I remember telling a woman I was seeing that, well, God was just telling me we needed to slow down, or that the timing was not in God's alignment yet. I used religious phrasing to cover up my own emotional immaturity and my sheer fear of real commitment. It was spiritual bypassing, plain and simple.

Selah Grace

Ezra, thank you for admitting that. Because when a man uses God's timing as an excuse to keep a woman hanging on, it creates so much spiritual confusion. She thinks she is being patient for God, but she is really just waiting on a man's unhealed fear.

Chapter 3

His Heart, Her Heart, God's Heart: Decoding Mixed Signals and Spiritual Confusion

Ezra James i

Let us break down what is actually happening behind those mixed signals, though. From a male perspective, when a man is truly sent by God, or even just acting with basic integrity, he operates with clear intentionality. He does not leave you guessing where you stand for three months. A godly man will initiate, he will honor your emotional boundaries, and he will protect your peace. Breadcrumbing, texting you once every four days just to keep your attention, that is not godly patience. That is passive reservation.

Selah Grace

And on the female side, Her Heart, we have to look in the mirror too. So many of us have a habit of projecting our spiritual hopes onto emotionally unavailable men. We take a man's potential and we pray over it until we mistake our own anxiety driven obsession for divine confirmation. We are praying for God to fix a situation that God is actually trying to rescue us from.

Dr. Naomi Ellis

And that brings us directly to God's Heart. Look at First Corinthians chapter fourteen, verse thirty three. God is not a God of confusion but of peace. If a relationship requires secrecy, hyper vigilance, or constant emotional chaos just to maintain, that is your answer right there. Divine assignments bring clarity. They welcome accountability from wise counsel and mature believers, rather than hiding in the dark.

Erica R Bell

That test right there, whether it invites light and wise counsel, that cuts right through the fog every single time.

Chapter 4

The Pressure Test: How God Sent Partners Handle Boundaries and Conflict

Selah Grace

So how do you actually pressure test this in real time? It comes down to the boundary reaction metric. What happens when you draw a clear, unambiguous boundary? Whether it is setting firm limits on physical intimacy, or protecting your schedule, or saying no to late night conversations. A counterfeit partner, someone who is operating in the flesh, will meet that boundary with guilt, or anger, or passive aggression.

Ezra James i

They will try to negotiate it, or make you feel like you are being legalistic or unloving for even having a line in the sand. But a man who honors God will honor your boundary without making you pay an emotional penalty for it.

Dr. Naomi Ellis

Conflict is the ultimate revealer of character. Proverbs chapter twenty four, verse ten says, if you faint in the day of adversity, your strength is small. When an unexpected trial comes, or when an argument breaks out, does this person regulate their emotions, or do they withdraw affection, stonewall, and resort to verbal destruction? Emotional regulation during disagreements is a nonnegotiable green flag for a covenant relationship.

Erica R Bell

I had to learn this the hard way, you know. I was in a relationship years ago where the chemistry was off the charts, like nothing I had ever felt before. But every time we hit a bump, every time I set a boundary around my emotional health, he made me feel like I was crazy. Walking away from that high chemistry, low character relationship was the hardest thing I had ever done, but it was the exact act of obedience God demanded to protect my spirit.

Chapter 5

Heart Check and Practical Steps: Moving From Anxiety to Peaceful Discernment

Erica R Bell

If you are sitting there right now listening to this, trying to figure out if you are in divine alignment or just caught in a emotional whirlwind, I want you to run through four diagnostic heart check questions. First, does this person's presence bring you closer to who God called you to be, or are you shrinking your boundaries just to keep them? Second, do you have consistent peace when you are away from them, or only temporary reassurance when they are giving you attention? Third, do the spiritually mature mentors in your life confirm this relationship, or are they raising alarms? And fourth, are you falling in love with who they actually are today, or a draft of who you hope they will become tomorrow?

Ezra James i

Those four questions are critical. And to put boots on the ground with this, here are three practical action steps you can take today. Step one, implement a sixty day observation window before making any emotional or romantic declarations. Step two, seek unvarnished, honest feedback from two spiritually mature mentors who have full permission to tell you the truth. And step three, separate forgiveness from access. You can forgive someone completely while recognizing they do not belong in your inner circle.

Erica R Bell

Let us pause and pray over this right now. Father God, right now I lift up every person listening who feels stuck in confusion, anxiety, or emotional fatigue over a relationship. Lord, give them divine discernment to see past the counterfeit spark and recognize true, godly alignment. Grant them the courage to enforce healthy boundaries and the strength to walk away from anything that requires them to compromise their peace or character. Fill their hearts with your quiet, steady peace, knowing that your best will never bring chaos. In Jesus name, amen.

Dr. Naomi Ellis

Amen. Trust his timing, protect your peace, and remember that God's best for you will always build you up, never tear down your foundation.
