When Quiet Isn’t Peace: Discernment in Dating
This episode explores how to tell the difference between genuine peace and a quiet relationship that is merely stagnant, along with why green flags should invite deeper discernment rather than rushed commitment. The hosts also unpack character under pressure, spiritual bypassing, and the importance of accountability, friendship, and wise counsel in preparing for covenant.

Chapter 1
The Trap of Counterfeit Peace
Selah Grace
I stayed for two years. Two whole years, um, sitting on a couch next to someone where, on paper, nothing was broken. We did not yell. We did not have these explosive arguments. And I kept telling myself, well, God is not the author of confusion, so this quiet must be His peace, right?
Erica R Bell
Mm.
Selah Grace
But it was not peace. It was just silence. It, it, it was this passive compliance where neither of us was growing, neither of us was praying together, and I was drying up spiritually inside while calling it stability.
Dr. Naomi Ellis
That is such a critical distinction, Selah. In my practice, I see so many individuals mistake the simple absence of open conflict for the presence of divine confirmation. But a quiet room is not automatically a holy room. Sometimes a room is quiet just because both people have stopped caring enough to engage.
Ezra James i
Right, yeah, like a, like a frozen lake, you know? It looks totally still on the surface, but nothing is actually growing underneath it. It is just cold.
Erica R Bell
Yes! And we fall for it because we are so exhausted from toxic situations that basic quiet feels like a miracle. But Proverbs 14 verse 12 warns us so clearly, there is a way that seems right to a man, but its end is the way to death. Emotional comfort can feel like God's will until scripture demands that we actually look for active spiritual fruit.
Selah Grace
And that brings us right to how we evaluate these early indicators. We hear so much about green flags, but we treat them like a final green light to rush toward marriage. A green flag is a sign that this is good, however it still means you need more information.
Dr. Naomi Ellis
Exactly, Selah. A green flag is an invitation to keep observing, not a permission slip to take off your discernment and put on rose colored glasses. It means keep going, keep asking questions, keep gathering data about who this person actually is when life happens.
Ezra James i
Man, that hits. Because when you see a couple of positive signs, it is so easy to start filling in the blanks with your own hopes instead of looking at what is really there in front of you.
Chapter 2
Character Under Pressure and Ownership in Conflict
Ezra James i
I, I, I have to be completely honest here. When I was in my early 20s, I knew all the right church words. I could quote scripture, I could lead a small group prayer, and I used all of that spiritual fluency to look like a mature Christian man to women I was dating. But the moment plans fell through, or, or, or work got stressful, I became defensive, distant, and completely unwilling to take blame.
Erica R Bell
Uh huh.
Ezra James i
It took me years, and a lot of painful conversations, to realize that quoting Galatians is very different from actually living out love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self control when life gets messy. Proverbs 15 verse 22 says plans fail for lack of counsel, but with many advisers they succeed. I had to learn to seek real, accountable counsel instead of using religious language as a shield to hide my lack of growth.
Dr. Naomi Ellis
That self awareness is so rare, Ezra, and it highlights the difference between spiritual bypassing and authentic humility. Spiritual bypassing sounds like, well, God knows my heart, or we just need to pray about this, whenever a real conflict comes up, completely skipping over the hard work of restitution, apology, and behavioral change.
Selah Grace
Wait, so what does a real green flag under pressure actually look like on a Tuesday afternoon?
Dr. Naomi Ellis
It looks like concrete, repeatable actions. Does this person take full ownership during a disagreement without turning it around on you? Do they communicate schedule changes clearly in advance because they respect your time? And how do they treat a server at a restaurant when the order is completely wrong? That daily character under mild friction tells you far more than a eloquent prayer at dinner ever will.
Erica R Bell
Yes! It is how they handle the friction, not how well they perform when everything is going their way.
Chapter 3
The Power of Deep Friendship and Wise Counsel
Dr. Naomi Ellis
You know, early on when I was dating my husband, long before we were seventeen years into marriage, he told me he had a standing Thursday morning accountability group with three other men. And I remember thinking, okay, that sounds nice. But then I saw it in practice. If he was struggling with something, he did not isolate. He picked up the phone. He let those men speak hard truths into his life.
Ezra James i
That is huge.
Dr. Naomi Ellis
It gave me infinitely more confidence in his readiness for covenant than any romantic speech he could have ever given me. The late Pastor Tim Keller used to emphasize that friendship is the foundational core of a healthy marriage. If a person cannot maintain deep, vulnerable, accountable friendships with their peers, they do not possess the emotional equipment required to sustain a lifelong covenant.
Selah Grace
Mm. Scripture backs that up so strongly. Ecclesiastes 4 verses 9 to 10 reminds us that two are better than one, for if they fall, one will lift up his companion. But woe to him who is alone when he falls! And Proverbs 27 verse 17 shows us that iron sharpens iron. Dating an isolated individual, someone who has no brothers or sisters in Christ calling them out, is a massive spiritual risk.
Erica R Bell
So, so how do we evaluate that without coming across like a private investigator asking for references?
Ezra James i
I think it comes down to asking curious, open ended questions about their community. Things like, who do you go to when you are making a hard decision? Or, when was the last time a friend called you out on something and how did you handle it? You are not interrogating them, you are just listening to see if they are actively submitted to a body of believers or if they operate as a lone ranger.
Selah Grace
Right, listening for alignment, not looking for perfection.
Chapter 4
Boundaries as Sacred Stewardship, Not Fortresses
Erica R Bell
I remember a season where I thought that if I put up boundaries, if I said, hey, I am not comfortable staying out past a certain hour, or I want to take our emotional conversations slow, I thought I would scare away any guy who was remotely interested. I thought being open meant sharing every detail of my past heartbreak on week two just to force closeness.
Dr. Naomi Ellis
Mm.
Erica R Bell
And all it did was leave me feeling completely unprotected and exposed. I had to learn that pacing disclosure and holding emotional and physical limits is not building a fortress to keep people out. It is sacred stewardship. First Thessalonians 4 verses 3 to 5 tells us to know how to possess our own vessels in sanctification and honor. And Psalm 119 verse 9 asks how a young person can keep their way pure. Boundaries are how we guard the treasury God gave us while trust is built over time.
Selah Grace
That distinction between a fortress and stewardship is so profound, Erica. A godly partner does not feel threatened by your boundaries. They honor them. If you state a simple limit, like, I cannot talk late tonight because I have an early morning, a mature person responds with, I completely respect that, sleep well. They do not guilt trip you or push past your line.
Ezra James i
Yeah, a real green flag is someone who sets their own internal limits too, without needing you to police them. They respect spiritual pacing, they do not try to rush intimacy, and they value your soul far more than their immediate desires.
Dr. Naomi Ellis
That self governance is the mark of real spiritual maturity.
Chapter 5
Moving from Anxious Evaluation to Peaceful Discernment
Selah Grace
So many of us are walking through dating with our shoulders up around our ears, constantly waiting for the other shoe to drop, hunting for hidden red flags because we have been burned before. But hypervigilance is not the same thing as spiritual discernment.
Erica R Bell
It really is not. James 3 verse 17 tells us that the wisdom from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, willing to yield, full of mercy and good fruits. And Philippians 4 verses 6 to 7 reminds us to be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication, let your requests be made known to God, and the peace of God will guard your hearts and minds. Divine wisdom brings clarity and quiet confidence, not constant mental chaos.
Dr. Naomi Ellis
If a situation requires you to abandon your inner peace to stay in it, that is not God's wisdom at work.
Erica R Bell
Amen. Let us take a moment right now to just pray over everyone listening who feels weary in this waiting season. Selah, will you join me?
Selah Grace
Father God, we bring every heart listening right now to You. Lord, You see the weary places, You see the tears shed over past disappointments, and You see the desire for healthy, God-honoring love. We ask that You replace hypervigilance with Your true peace. Give them eyes to see clearly, patience to wait for genuine spiritual fruit, and the courage to walk away from counterfeit quiet.
Erica R Bell
Yes, Jesus. Lord, quiet the noise in their minds. Remind them that Your timing is perfect and that You care about their emotional safety even more than they do. Give them wisdom to steward their hearts well as they trust in You. In Jesus' name, Amen.
Ezra James i
Amen. God knows your journey, and stepping into healthy alignment brings a peace that lasts.
Dr. Naomi Ellis
Alright, good chatting today, everyone.
